For nothing will be impossible with God. Luke 1:37 (NRSV)

I have been doing Children’s Sermons or Time with Younger Disciples for more than thirty years now. Though perhaps not as creative as other stories that I have done, I suppose I get the most enjoyment from teaching the children a new song, encouraging them to sing and hoping that such a song might come to their minds as they grow in their faith and whenever problems in life may arise. Over the years one of the songs that I have taught is: My God Is So Big.

The lyrics are as follows:

My God is so big, so strong and so mighty,
There’s nothing my God cannot do.
My God is so big, so strong and so mighty,
There’s nothing my God cannot do.
The mountains are His,
The valleys (some lyrics say “rivers”) are His,
The stars are His handiwork, too.
My God is so big, so strong and so mighty,
There’s nothing my God cannot do.

(For you! Is sometimes added to end the song on a personal note.)

Clapping and various motions can be included to encourage the children to sing and participate. Particularly relating to creation, the song affirms that there is nothing that God cannot do. In other words, nothing is impossible for God. That scenario has little to do with where we find these words in scripture.

The angel Gabriel has announced to the young Virgin Mary that she will bear a son. She wonders how this will be and is told that the Holy Spirit will come upon her enabling her to conceive and bear this child, who will be called the Son of God. Furthermore, Gabriel announces to Mary that her old cousin Elizabeth, long considered to be barren has conceived a child. And Gabriel said, “For nothing will be impossible with God.” A childlike faith, a simple trust enabled Mary to accept Gabriel’s words to her, first, and second, regarding her cousin, Elizabeth. We learn that nothing is impossible for God … that a baby can be born to the youthful Virgin Mary and to old Elizabeth. If they had been familiar with this song’s, lyrics, I suspect that Mary and Elizabeth might have joined in singing:

My God is so big, so strong and so mighty,
There’s nothing my God cannot do!

Whenever we come to grips with something being impossible for us, we need to remember “For nothing will be impossible with God.”

Prayer

O God, we thank You that in a world where so much is possible for us, we are reminded that there is nothing impossible for You! Continue to amaze us, Awesome God! In Jesus’ name, we pray, Amen.
