Working and Eating

Those who till their land will have plenty of food,
but those who follow worthless pursuits have no sense.

Proverbs 12:11

When the author of Proverbs recorded his wisdom, an agrarian populace took the words to heart. Tilling the land was the primary way to secure food for the belly. But, evidently, there were also those around who passed up on this form of manual labor for worthless pursuits.

I still know a few fine folk here in Polk County who till the land, but many more of my friends join me in working in other fields (no pun intended.) But the message still applies: We work so that we can survive.

One of the talk show hosts I listen to on the radio has been known to criticize a person who has chosen not to work and then complains about what they need by saying

“They haven’t equated working with eating.”

It may still be true that…

Dear God, thank You for the work that I am able to do as I try to provide this day for myself and my family. Amen.
