I Samuel 17:4-50

Everyone seems to know about David and Goliath. These names have become the symbol of the underdog defeating the champion. And this is the story of what happens when a person chooses to stand up for God (with God.)

As the editors of the Spark Story Bible tell the story of David and Goliath, they give children and adults alike some of the most poignant details:

(When ) no one stepped forward to take Goliath’s challenge, Saul gelt a small tug on his sleeve. Looking down, he saw David, a young shepherd boy.

“I will do it, King Saul,” David said. “I will fight Goliath.”

“You are a boy. How can you beat a gigantic man like Goliath?” Saul turned to go.

“Wait, King Saul,” David said. “God protects me from the wolves and bears that go after my sheep. God will protect me now too.”

David reached down and picked up five smooth stones…”

Everyone knows how the story ends. The story in this children’s Bible adds a PS

Keep a small, smooth stone in your pocket. Touch it whenever you feel afraid. Remember that God is with you.

Not a bad way to sum it all up.

Prayer

God, help me to stand up for You and with You today, remembering that You are always with me. Amen.
