And God said, “This is the sign of the covenant I am making between me and you and every living creature with you, a covenant for all generations to come: I have set my rainbow in the clouds, and it will be the sign of the covenant between me and the earth. Whenever I bring clouds over the earth and the rainbow appears in the clouds, I will remember my covenant between me and you and all living creatures of every kind. Never again will the waters become a flood to destroy all life. Whenever the rainbow appears in the clouds, I will see it and remember the everlasting covenant between God and all living creatures of every kind on the earth.” Genesis 9:12-16
When’s the last time you saw a rainbow fill up the sky? It may have been a little while because our Florida weather has been a little on the dry side lately. I have always drawn comfort seeing the various colors stretch across sky, especially after a dark and dreary thunderstorm. I love the fact that is exactly what a rainbow is, a direct covenant from our Lord promising that He would never flood the earth again. We get to see that sign from Him on a regular basis, especially during the summertime and that brings joy to my heart.
What about those storms in life where the darkness seems to outweigh the light? Is there another type of rainbow that God sends? Maybe it’s in a friend’s visit, in a phone call, in a devotional, or in a song on the radio. I believe that God sends us rainbows of hope that fill our lives when things get dark and lonely, when we can’t quite see the light through the darkness. Remember that pain may last for the night, but joy comes in the morning. Rainbows are all around us. Sometimes they light up the sky after a treacherous storm and sometimes they show up in a simple phone call from a friend. God is good and He promises to never leave us or forsake us. His Light is everywhere!
God of all living creatures, You provide us with hope each and every day. We thank You for friends and family who are there to lift us up. We praise You that sometimes we are the ones called to brighten someone else’s day. Help us to be rainbows to those we come in contact with and to always look for the rainbows that You send when things seem to be dark and dreary. We praise You and we love you! Amen.
