In the Gospel According to John, there is lots of good news packed into the opening section.

He [Jesus] was in the world, and the world came into being through him; yet the world did not know him. He came to what was his own, and his own people did not accept him. But to all who received him, who believed in his name, he gave power to become children of God, who were born, not of blood or of the will of the flesh or of the will of man, but of God.
John 1:10-13

Near the end of John we find a discussion with Thomas and the other disciples about belief. And here in the opening paragraphs, the real treasure found in believing is spelled out – as we believe in Jesus we have the power to become the children of God.

I am probably preaching to the choir today when I ask, “Do you believe in Jesus?” Assuming a positive response, here’s another question: “Do you know that you are a child of God?” With another positive response, let’s celebrate our family.

As children of God, we get to experience God’s loving care (like the best earthly father and mother all rolled into one) each and every day. As children of God, we get to live on God’s estate and enjoy the fruits of the fields. As children of God, we get to inherit the kingdom. As children of God, we get the opportunity and the challenge to live up to the family name. As children of God, we are truly blessed.

Thank You, God, for claiming me as Your beloved child. Help me to enjoy my place in the family today as I follow the example of my Lord and Savior Jesus, in whose name I pray. Amen.
