When Herod saw Jesus, he was very glad, for he had been wanting to see him for a long time, because he had heard about him and was hoping to see him perform some sign. He questioned him at some length, but Jesus gave him no answer. The chief priests and the scribes stood by, vehemently accusing him. Even Herod with his soldiers treated him with contempt and mocked him; then he put an elegant robe on him, and sent him back to Pilate. That same day Herod and Pilate became friends with each other; before this they had been enemies.
Luke 23:8-12
When King Herod had the opportunity to meet Jesus face to face, he squandered it. According to Luke, Herod had been wanting to see Jesus for a long time, but he was simply wanting to see Jesus perform some sign (or miracle.) Herod wished for Jesus to entertain him. (Like a magician.) Herod didn’t realize what he really could have gained by embracing God in Human flesh, our Lord and Savior Jesus.
Many of us go through life saying that we want to see Jesus. Do we want him just to entertain us? Or are we anxious to get to know Jesus in such a way that our lives are changed, and we live abundantly and gratefully as those who are saved?
Dear God, help me to experience the depths of Your love, grace, and presence in my Lord and Savior Jesus, in whose name I pray. Amen.
