Isaiah 45:3
I will give you the treasures of darkness and riches hidden in secret places, so that you may know that it is I, the Lord, who call you by name.
Barbara Brown Taylor is a best-selling author, teacher, and Episcopal priest. Her book, Learning To Walk In the Dark is her thoughtful explorations of things she has learned in the dark that she never would have learned in the light. This particular quote comes from her chapter of cave exploration in the dark and discovering the God moment in a small rock that only shone in the dark.
While I am looking for something large, bright and unmistakably holy, God slips something small, dark and apparently negligible in my pocket. How many other treasures have I walked right by because they did not meet my standards?
Creator God, who is the source of light as well as darkness, we are continually awed in Your ability to teach us. To awe us and allow us to learn anew at Your feet. We are grateful that what is precious and of value in our world is through Your standards, not ours and in that value we are Yours. In Christ’s name, Amen.
