Many proclaim themselves loyal, but who can find one worthy of trust? Proverbs 20:6 (NRSV)

In my relationships I place a high value on loyalty! I want to know that people will stick by me through thick and through thin. Likewise I try very hard to show that same loyalty to others that I expect from them. That having been said, I know that on occasions I have disappointed people when they expected me to demonstrate loyalty and I fell short. I also know what it is like to be disappointed when others failed to show the loyalty I was expecting. It takes time before I feel that I can trust them again. Perhaps that has been your experience too.

So who do we trust? The Psalmist answered well. “O my God in You I trust.” (25:2) “It is better to take refuge in the Lord than to put confidence in mortals.” God alone is the One in whom we can place our trust and not be disappointed. In other words, you and I can search for that person who will be true blue and in whom we can place our trust, but we must accept that they are human too, just like us, and at one time or another they may disappoint us just as we may disappoint them.

Ultimately, God alone is the One in whom we may trust and who will never ever disappoint us. Living in this world we still have to take the chance to trust others and hope that they will not disappoint us. Living in a world where we believe we cannot trust anyone is sad and it would be difficult to face each day suspecting that someone would betray and disappoint us. The best we can do is place our absolute trust in God and at least extend some confidence in those whom we believe could show a measure of trustworthiness.

Prayer

ord of creation, as surely as evergreen trees remain green year round and as surely as blue skies return after gray clouds have passed by, so we know we can always trust You. We are grateful that You will never ever disappoint us. Help us to remain loyal to our loved ones and friends through thick and through thin and to exhibit always the trustworthiness to others that we expect of them. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.
