Thank you for visiting First Presbyterian Church of Winter Haven On-Line.
If you happen by the church building, you will notice our "Christ window"
facing Highway 17, a major route through Winter Haven. The out-stretched hands
of Christ, and the inscription below the window "Come unto me ..." have
served as our church's invitation to membership and ministry for the last 75
years.
We hope that this invitation is still being extended through our members,
staff, and programs. Enjoy learning more about us on-line. And if you are
ever close enough to see our window, please stop in and get to know us.
In Christ,
Steve Negley
Pastor

Souper Bowl of Caring
February 7, 2010
It’s that time of year again when our church gears up for the Souper Bowl of Caring! The Souper Bowl of
Caring started with a simple prayer. “Lord, even as we enjoy the Super Bowl Football game, help us to be
mindful of those who are without a bowl of soup to eat.” This prayer inspired a youth-led movement to
help hungry and hurting people around the world. The prayer was delivered by Brad Smith, who was a
seminary intern serving at Spring Valley Presbyterian Church in Columbia, SC. It was his vision to use
Super Bowl weekend, a time when people come together for football and fun, to also unify the nation for a
higher good: collecting dollars and canned food for the needy. The youth collected donations at their
schools and churches in soup pots, and then sent EVERY dollar directly to a local charity of THEIR
choice! The tradition continues and in 2009, youth across the country helped generate over $10 million for
local charities through the Souper Bowl of Caring.
This year we will continue our long standing tradition of collecting money and canned goods for this event.
Every dollar collected will go directly to support our Soup Kitchen and Bag Lunch Ministries. After
church on Sunday, February 7, youth will be waiting at the exits with soup pots to take up the collection.

Thanks...A Ton!
...or, we could almost say - thanks a ton and a half. The response to our RICE AND BEANS drive for our
friends in the Presbyterian churches in Honduras has been wonderfully overwhelming. As of Monday
morning, November 23, when the first piles were boxed for transport to Tampa, we had brought in 1,660
pounds of rice, and 676 pounds of small red beans (for a total of OVER ONE TON OF FOOD). Those
items were delivered to Tampa before Thanksgiving. The beans and rice that have been brought in since,
will be boxed this week and they will make their way to Tampa before the container is shipped to
Honduras the second week of December. Thanks for sharing so generously with our Christian brothers and
sisters in need!
